Ce soir sera un rendez-vous tel que l’association Thélème, à Lussac, les aime. Un moment de partage, de découverte d’un travail d‘artistes. Depuis le début du mois, Celine Pradeu-Kanagasabai et Guillaume Blanc ont investi les locaux de l’association, à La Devignère. Une vraie residence artistique. Un mois de présence, depuis le début novembre, après un premier court séjour en mai dernier. Trente jours pour donner naissance à un spectacle.

Directrice artistique de la compagnie de danse Relevée, de Paris, Céline Pradeu-Kanagasabai signe là la chorégraphie de « CPK – 30 ans, solo pour une danseuse… et un violoniste». Un travail original et trés personnel. Un univers particulier également.

L’approche de la quarantaine travaille ou déstabilise certains. Et d’autres pas du tout. C’est à 30 ans que Céline Pradeu-Kanagasabai a senti, elle, le besoin de s’interroger sur la vie. Sur la sienne notamment. Normal qu’elle ait eu envie de s’exprimer sur scène. Logique que son discours puise dans ce qui est sa vie artistique depuis toujours et dans ce qui constitue ses racines. Née d’une mère française et d’un père d’origine indienne, Celine Pradeu-Kanagasabai a exploré ces deux mondes si différents, si lointains, mais qu’elle porte en elle. Ce soir, elle présentera une partie de ce cheminement. La semaine prochaine, une autre. A la fin du mois, c‘est à un parterre de professionnels qu’elle offrira un filage complet de sa création.

Des pas de danse indiens et contemporains

Dans ce voyage artistique, elle a entraîné un musicien. Violoniste, Guillaume Blanc a fait par la même occasion ses premiers pas… de danse. «Je voulais qu’il soit autant créateur de sons que de mouvements.» Pour les sons, pas de problèmes. Avec ses violons acoustiques et électriques que lui a prêtés son ancien prof Didier Lockwood, Guillaume Blanc, est dans son élément. Pour le reste, Céline Pradeu-Kanagasabai lui a balisé le terrain. «II y a peu de moments ou la musique est purement accompagnatrice. Elle a un rôle», explique-t-elle. Et le choix de l‘instrument est loin d’être anodin. «Le violon fait complètement sens, autant dans la musique occidentale que dans la musique indienne», poursuit-elle.

Une opposition sur laquelle elle joue. Comme avec toutes celles qui composent son spectacle : la peau blanche de Guillaume Blanc et la sienne, nettement mate. Son sari et la queue-de-pie du violoniste. La tradition et la modernité… Et les techniques de danse si différentes que la danse contemporaine, la danse indienne de style Bharat-Natyam, la danse néoclassique. «J’utiIise des langages que je connais. Je passe d’une technique à l’autre». D’un costume à l’autre également.

«C‘est un voyage que je propose. A la fin du spectacle, il n’y a pas de volonté de conclusion. Je ne peux pas être entièrement une Française, entièrement une Indienne».

Un grand écart de plus pour la danseuse, et qu’elle veut faire partager. Ce sera le cas lors de plusieurs ateliers que le duo animera avec des lycéens de Confolens, avec des adultes handicapés des résidences de Saint-Claud et de Ruffec notamment.

Bénéficiant de l’aide à la création du conseil régional, «CPK-30 ans » devrait, en plus de dates déjà arrêtées à Paris, à Marseille, refaire un tour en Charente. Sans doute dès le mois de mars prochain à Jarnac, l’association Thélème se mettant déjà en quête de représentations en Charente limousine.

« Listening to my inner voice. I let myself dance, sometimes influenced by French and sometimes by Indian dance, » explain 34-year-old Céline Pradeu-Kanagasabai, a dancer and choreographer who is based in Paris.
In Chandigarh on Saturday for a solo dance performance at Alliance Française, Sector 36, she talks about her own unique fusion of dances and inquest for her paternal roots.
Born in Paris to a French mother and a Sri Lankan-Tamil father. Celine says she started learning ballet at a young age of five after falling in love with the art.
« Right from my childhood, I found pleasure in dancing. Learning the ballet was an obvious choice, since l had been born in Paris, » she reasons
Later, when the young girl turned 15, she started learning contemporary dance. « The reason for the switch was that I found greater body freedom in contemporary dance style than in the classic ballet. It was this liberty, that perhaps helped me introduce mudras and typical movements of Bharatanatyam to this dance form, » Celine says
When she was 20, Celine began learning Bharatanatyam in Paris, under Nirupama Nityanandan of Kalakshetra Foundation. « Somewhere in my heart, I wanted to connect on my father’s roots and culture. This inspired me to learn Bharatanatyam and then to use it in my contemporary dance form, » she explains.
Interestingly, Celine calls her dance style ‘Bharatemporary’, it being a fusion of Bharatanatyam and contemporary dance, with elements of western classical style thrown in. On what led her to weave these distinct dance forms, she says these are her efforts to trace her roots and that dance just happens on be her medium.
However. the dancer clarifies that learning the basic rules of any dance form is important and insists that she had no intention of hurting the sentiments of purists of Indian classical dance form with her fusion.
The whole idea, adds Celine, is to search for deeper movements in both dances. « My father is very happy seeing me learn his side of the culture‚ »she smiles.
Celine’s first performance in India was at Puducherry earlier this month, followed by one in Hyderabad and now in Chandigarh. Next, the dancer travels to Jaipur, Bangalore and Goa. While Celine’s exploration of this fusion is still at a basic level, she hopes to prepare more such performances in the future.
As far as the reactions of the audience goes, Celine says they have been encouraging so far, with there also being many a surprise thrown in.

A dancer’s quest 

PASSING BY Dancer choreographer Celine Pradeu—Kanagasabai talks about her contemporary dance form with inspiration from Bharatanatyam

Born to a French mother and a Sri Lankan Tamil father, it is in her‘ quest to know more about her roots that Celine Pradeu-Kanagasabai, found her answers in dance. She started learning classical ballet at the age of five, and when she was 15 years she graduated to contemporary dance.

“Born in France, ballet and contemporary form of dance was easy to learn, but I wanted to learn more about my father’s background as well,” she says. . The need to understand the culture on her father’s side led the Parisian to take up Bharatanatyam at the age of 20 under the tutelage of Nirupama Nityanandan of Kalakshetra Foundation. “I was requested for a solo performance but I knew I couldn’t get it ready in such a short notice, no I decided to give a dance talk where I will perform parts of my solo and explain my dance style,”explains Celine on her fifth visit to the country. “On my last visit, I took an intense one month training in Kathakali and I use the basics in my dance,” she says.

Celine calls her dance style ‘Bharatemporary’ which is a fusion of Bharatanatyam and contemporary dance with elements of western classical style. “In contemporary dance you search for the deeper movements, the sensation and feelings are more « important than the form where as Bharatanatyam is more rigorous, disciplinary and straight spirited. For example I take the mudras from Bharatanatyam and incorporate them in my contemporary form,” she explains.

But she clarifies that she doesn’t want to hurt the purists of Indian classical dance “My intention is not to create anything new. I am not trying to create a revolution through my dance. It is more intimate. It is my attempt to connect with both the cultures. It is my personal quest,” she clarifies. However, she insists that to create a fusion dance style, it is important to learn the basics and rules of both the dance forms. The dancer choreographer was in the city to give a dance talk as a part of Women’s March 2012 in association with Alliance Francaise Hyderabad.
